Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFF GGHHFFIIJJD K KLDDMMN IIEEO DDIIAAHHPPJJFFe kites an' carts an' lots of things | A |
You pull along the ground with strings | A |
And he knows all the names of birds | B |
And how they call 'thout using words | B |
And where they live and what they eat | C |
And how they build their nests so neat | C |
He's lots of fun Sometimes all day | D |
He comes to visit me and play | D |
You see he's getting old and so | E |
To work he doesn't have to go | E |
And when it isn't raining he | F |
Drops in to have some fun with me | F |
- | |
He takes my hand and we go out | G |
And everything we talk about | G |
He tells me how God makes the trees | H |
And why it hurts to pick up bees | H |
Sometimes he stops and shows to me | F |
The place where fairies used to be | F |
And then he tells me stories too | I |
And I am sorry when he's through | I |
When I am asking him for more | J |
He says 'Why there's a candy store | J |
Let's us go there and see if they | D |
Have got the kind we like to day ' | - |
Then when we get back home my ma | K |
Says 'You are spoiling Buddy Pa ' | - |
- | |
My grandpa is my mother's pa | K |
I guess that's what all grandpas are | L |
And sometimes ma all smiles will say | D |
'You didn't always act that way | D |
When I was little then you said | M |
That children should be sent to bed | M |
And not allowed to rule the place | N |
And lead old folks a merry chase ' | - |
And grandpa laughs and says 'That's true | I |
That's what I used to say to you | I |
It is a father's place to show | E |
The young the way that they should go | E |
But grandpas have a different task | O |
Which is to get them all they ask ' | - |
- | |
When I get big and old and gray | D |
I'm going to spend my time in play | D |
I'm going to be a grandpa too | I |
And do as all the grandpas do | I |
I'll buy my daughter's children things | A |
Like horns and drums and tops with strings | A |
And tell them all about the trees | H |
And frogs and fish and birds and bees | H |
And fairies in the shady glen | P |
And tales of giants too and when | P |
They beg of me for just one more | J |
I'll take them to the candy store | J |
I'll buy them everything they see | F |
The way my grandpa does for me | F |
