Fatherhood Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDBC EEBFGGHF GGGAIIIA GGEJAAFK AAELEEKL

How's the little chap to knowA
Just the proper roads to goA
If you never travel with himB
While he's little hand in handC
How's he ever going to learnD
Just what corners not to turnD
If you never try to tell himB
So that he can understandC
-
Who think you will train him rightlyE
Who will watch him daily nightlyE
Who will take the time to show himB
Just the things he ought to doF
Will some stranger or a neighborG
Take upon himself the laborG
Which the Lord above intendedH
As a duty just for youF
-
Is it safe to trust anotherG
Even though he be your brotherG
To the molding of his futureG
Can you watch him come and goA
Can you go on money makingI
Without thought or trouble takingI
To discover if he's learningI
Just the things you'd have him knowA
-
There's no fortune worth his splendorG
Or his youthful days and tenderG
There's no goal so bright with gloryE
Which is worth his happinessJ
He's your hope of joy tomorrowA
As you'll find out to your sorrowA
If you let him wander from youF
While you seek your own successK
-
Let the fame and money goA
Teach him what he ought to knowA
You will find a greater gloryE
Than the selfish seeker canL
Shape his mind and soul to beautyE
God has given you this dutyE
And your age shall glow with gladnessK
When your boy becomes a manL
