Father's Chore Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGDGD HIJIKDKD

My Pa can hit his thumbnail with a hammer and keep stillA
He can cut himself while shaving an' not swearB
If a ladder slips beneath him an' he gets a nasty spillA
He can smile as though he really didn't careB
But the pan beneath the ice box when he goes to empty thatC
Then a sound proof room the children have to huntD
For we have a sad few minutes in our very pleasant flatC
When the water in it splashes down his frontD
-
My Pa believes his temper should be all the time controlledE
He doesn't rave at every little thingF
When his collar button underneath the chiffonier has rolledE
A snatch of merry ragtime he will singF
But the pan beneath the ice box when to empty that he goesG
As he stoops to drag it out we hear a gruntD
From the kitchen comes a rumble an' then everybody knowsG
That he splashed the water in it down his frontD
-
Now the distance from the ice box to the sink's not very farH
I'm sure it isn't over twenty feetI
But though very short the journey it is long enough for PaJ
As he travels it disaster grim to meetI
And it's seldom that he makes it without accident althoughK
In the summer time it is his nightly stuntD
And he says a lot of language that no gentleman should knowK
When the water in it splashes down his frontD
