Eternal Friendship Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEGHIJI KLKLMNMN IOIOABAB

Who once has had a friend has foundA
The link 'twixt mortal and divineB
Though now he sleeps in hallowed groundA
He lives in memory's sacred shrineB
And there he freely moves aboutC
A spirit that has quit the clayD
And in the times of stress and doubtC
Sustains his friend throughout the dayD
-
No friend we love can ever dieE
The outward form but disappearsF
I know that all my friends are nighE
Whenever I am moved to tearsG
And when my strength and hope are goneH
The friends no more that once I knewI
Return to cheer and urge me onJ
Just as they always used to doI
-
They whisper to me in the darkK
Kind words of counsel and of cheerL
When hope has flickered to a sparkK
I feel their gentle spirits nearL
And Oh because of them I striveM
With all the strength that I can callN
To keep their friendship still aliveM
And to be worthy of them allN
-
Death does not end our friendships trueI
We all are debtors to the deadO
There wait on everything we doI
The splendid souls who've gone aheadO
To them I hold that we are boundA
By double pledges to be fineB
Who once has had a friend has foundA
The link 'twixt mortal and divineB
