Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EAEAFGFG HDHDAIAI AJAAAKAK AAAJLBLBI START the day with paper white | A |
And put it in my old machine | B |
And wonder whether as I write | A |
The night will find my copy clean | B |
Will this day's finished task be fair | C |
Or full of blemishes and flaws | D |
Will what my hands have written there | C |
Deserve derision or applause | D |
- | |
Have I put down a single thing | E |
That better would have been unwrit | A |
Have I let pass a jibe or fling | E |
With venom at the point of it | A |
This paper spotless came to me | F |
How will it leave my little den | G |
What will the printer's judgment be | F |
And what will say my fellow men | G |
- | |
'Tis mine to do with as I will | H |
I view the finished work and pause | D |
Here is a thought that I must kill | H |
And here a verse that's full of flaws | D |
And here's a line that I'd regret | A |
If ever I should let it go | I |
The paper now is blurred and yet | A |
I much prefer to have it so | I |
- | |
Tomorrow it will be too late | A |
Whatever is must stand for aye | J |
If I have penned a line in hate | A |
That stays the record for today | A |
And whether it be good or bad | A |
I cannot change one single line | K |
My chance to be of worth I've had | A |
And every blemish there is mine | K |
- | |
My life is like the paper sheet | A |
On which I toil from day to day | A |
And there the bitter and the sweet | A |
Are written down to last for aye | J |
And oh I hope when comes the call | L |
That takes me from this earthly scene | B |
The God above who judges all | L |
Will find my copy fairly clean | B |
