Compensation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDDEE FGHIJJKK CLMLNNDD

I'd like to think when life is doneA
That I had filled a needed postB
That here and there I'd paid my fareC
With more than idle talk and boastB
That I had taken gifts divineD
The breath of life and manhood fineD
And tried to use them now and thenE
In service for my fellow menE
-
I'd hate to think when life is throughF
That I had lived my round of yearsG
A useless kind that leaves behindH
No record in this vale of tearsI
That I had wasted all my daysJ
By treading only selfish waysJ
And that this world would be the sameK
If it had never known my nameK
-
I'd like to think that here and thereC
When I am gone there shall remainL
A happier spot that might have notM
Existed had I toiled for gainL
That someone's cheery voice and smileN
Shall prove that I had been worth whileN
That I had paid with something fineD
My debt to God for life divineD
