At The Peace Table Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHJKLK MNONPQPQ CRSTUVWVWho shall sit at the table then when the terms | A |
of peace are made | B |
The wisest men of the troubled lands in their | C |
silver and gold brocade | B |
Yes they shall gather in solemn state to speak | D |
for each living race | E |
But who shall speak for the unseen dead that shall | F |
come to the council place | E |
- | |
Though you see them not and you hear them not | G |
they shall sit at the table too | H |
They shall throng the room where the peace is | I |
made and know what it is you do | H |
The innocent dead from the sea shall rise to stand | J |
at the wise man's side | K |
And over his shoulder a boy shall look a boy | L |
that was crucified | K |
- | |
You may guard the doors of that council hall with | M |
barriers strong and stout | N |
But the dead unbidden shall enter there and never | O |
you'll shut them out | N |
And the man that died in the open boat and the | P |
babes that suffered worse | Q |
Shall sit at the table when peace is made by the | P |
side of a martyred nurse | Q |
- | |
You may see them not but they'll all be there | C |
when they speak you may fail to hear | R |
You may think that you're making your pacts | S |
alone but their spirits will hover near | T |
And whatever the terms of the peace you make | U |
with the tyrant whose hands are red | V |
You must please not only the living here but must | W |
satisfy your dead | V |
