My Pa he eats his breakfastA
in a funny sort of wayB
We hardly ever see himC
at the first meal of the dayB
Ma puts his food before himC
and he settles in his placeD
An' then he props the paper upE
and we can't see his faceD
We hear him blow his coffeeF
and we hear him chew his toastG
But it's for the morning paperH
that he seems to care the mostG
-
Ma says that little childrenI
mighty grateful ought to beF
To the folks that fixed the eveningJ
as the proper time for teaF
She says if meals were only servedK
to people once a dayB
An' that was in the morningJ
just before Pa goes awayB
We'd never know how father lookedL
when he was in his placeD
Coz he'd always have the morning paperH
stuck before his faceD
-
He drinks his coffee steamin' hotM
an' passes Ma his cupE
To have it filled a second timeN
an' never once looks upE
He never has a word to sayB
but just sits there an' readsO
An' when she sees his hand stuck outP
Ma gives him what he needsO
She guesses what it is he wantsQ
coz it's no use to askR
Pa's got to read his paperH
an' sometimes that's quite a taskR
-
One morning we had breakfastA
an' his features we could seeF
But his face was long an' solemnS
an' he didn't speak to meF
An' we couldn't get him laughin'S
an' we couldn't make him smileT
An' he said the toast was soggyF
an' the coffee simply vileT
Then Ma said 'What's the matterH
Why are you so cross an' glum '-
An' Pa 'most took her head offU
coz the paper didn't comeS
