A New Year's Plea Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IBIB

Lord let me stand in the thick of the fightA
Let me bear what I must without whiningB
Grant me the wisdom to do what is rightA
Though a thousand false beacons are shiningB
-
Let me be true as the steel of a bladeC
Make me bigger than skillful or cleverD
Teach me to cling to my best unafraidC
And harken to false gospels neverD
-
Let me be brave when the burden is greatE
Faithful when wounded by sorrowF
Teach me when troubled with patience to waitE
The better and brighter to morrowF
-
Spare me from hatred and envy and shameG
Open my eyes to life's beautyH
Let not the glitter of fortune or fameG
Blind me to what is my dutyH
-
Let me be true to myself to the endI
Let me stand to my task without whiningB
Let me be right as a man as a friendI
Though a thousand false beacons are shiningB
