A child of mine He said | B |
For you to love the while he lives | C |
And mourn for when he's dead | B |
It may be six or seven years | D |
Or twenty two or three | E |
But will you till I call him back | F |
Take care of him for Me | E |
He'll bring his charms to gladden you | G |
And should his stay be brief | H |
You'll have his lovely memories | I |
As solace for your grief | H |
I cannot promise he will stay | J |
Since all from earth return | K |
But there are lessons taught down there | L |
I want this child to learn | K |
I've looked the wide world over | M |
In search for teachers true | G |
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes | N |
I have selected you | G |
Now will you give him all your love | O |
Nor think the labour vain | P |
Nor hate me when I come | Q |
To take him home again | R |
I fancied that I heard them say | J |

For all the joys Thy child shall bring | T |
The risk of grief we'll run | U |
We'll shelter him with tenderness | V |
We'll love him while we may | J |
And for the happiness we've known | W |
Forever grateful stay | J |
But should the angels call for him | X |
Much sooner than we've planned | Y |
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes | Z |
And try to understand | Y |

John van Heerden : Our Grandson, Harvey John, was born on Monday afternoon, 6th March. He was aware and looking around with his big blue eyes by Tuesday. He passed away at 02H30 on Wednesday morning.
What can we say? What can I say to my Daughter and Son in law to help with the grief? It all seems so shallow.
Inez Marguerite: This is such a beautiful poem. it makes me cry every time I read it.
Arline: This poem was given to me in the darkness of losing my little boy over 30 years ago now. I've given it to so many people over the years and it always brings comfort.
Thank you Mr. Guest.
Maureen Roberts-Wray: A grandson has been killed on Sunday in a motor bike accident. This poem is so beautiful and so appropriate. Thank you
