Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFEGHIHJKLKMGNG OPQRJSTUVJWJXYZY

I will lend you for a little timeA
A child of mine He saidB
For you to love the while he livesC
And mourn for when he's deadB
It may be six or seven yearsD
Or twenty two or threeE
But will you till I call him backF
Take care of him for MeE
He'll bring his charms to gladden youG
And should his stay be briefH
You'll have his lovely memoriesI
As solace for your griefH
I cannot promise he will stayJ
Since all from earth returnK
But there are lessons taught down thereL
I want this child to learnK
I've looked the wide world overM
In search for teachers trueG
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanesN
I have selected youG
Now will you give him all your loveO
Nor think the labour vainP
Nor hate me when I comeQ
To take him home againR
I fancied that I heard them sayJ
'Dear Lord Thy will be done 'S
For all the joys Thy child shall bringT
The risk of grief we'll runU
We'll shelter him with tendernessV
We'll love him while we mayJ
And for the happiness we've knownW
Forever grateful stayJ
But should the angels call for himX
Much sooner than we've plannedY
We'll brave the bitter grief that comesZ
And try to understandY

John van Heerden : Our Grandson, Harvey John, was born on Monday afternoon, 6th March. He was aware and looking around with his big blue eyes by Tuesday. He passed away at 02H30 on Wednesday morning.
What can we say? What can I say to my Daughter and Son in law to help with the grief? It all seems so shallow.
Inez Marguerite: This is such a beautiful poem. it makes me cry every time I read it.
Arline: This poem was given to me in the darkness of losing my little boy over 30 years ago now. I've given it to so many people over the years and it always brings comfort.
Thank you Mr. Guest.
Maureen Roberts-Wray: A grandson has been killed on Sunday in a motor bike accident. This poem is so beautiful and so appropriate. Thank you
