Robert Grosseteste was one of the most eminent and universal scholars of his time. At his death, in 1253, as Bishop of Lincoln, he left behind him a literary heritage, which contemporary scholarship is still trying to come fully to terms with. This volume offers a series of studies concerning aspects of Grosseteste's thought on religious and metaphysical themes. Paying particular attention to questions of chronology and sources, the author aims to elicit his deeper presuppositions and to isolate certain of his intuitions that seem quite original. The articles include two unedited writings by Grosseteste, on the sun and on human nature, and place the accent not on the possible unity of his intellectual initiatives, but on their variety - concerning language and thought, the nature of light, the Ten Commandments and the Christian conscience, mystical union and the reasons for the incarnation.

What was the role played by local police volunteers in the Holocaust? Using powerful eye-witness descriptions from the towns and villages of Belorussia and Ukraine, Martin Dean's new book reveals local policemen as hands-on collaborators of the Nazis. They brutally drove Jewish neighbors from their homes and guarded them closely on the way to their deaths. Some distinguished themselves as ruthless murders. Outnumbering German police manpower in these areas, the local police were the foot-soldiers of the Holocaust in the east.

Dean Kamen Books, Dean Kamen poetry book Capitalism and Citizenship Authors: Kathryn Dean
Publisher: Routledge
Published Date: 2012-11-12

Can capitalism and citizenship co-exist? In recent years advocates of the Third Way have championed the idea of public-spirited capitalism as the antidote to the many problems confronting the modern world. This book develops a multi-disciplinary theory of citizenship, exploring the human abilities needed for its practice. It then argues that capitalism impedes the nurturing of these abilities. In advancing these arguments, Kathryn Dean draws on the work of a wide range of thinkers including Freud, Marx, Lacan, Habermas and Castells.

When Tony Viramontes' work appeared in the late 1970s, his hard and direct style of drawing was a marked contrast to the prevailing soft-pastel school of fashion illustration. He scored immediate success, rapidly acquiring the kind of prestigious editorial commissions normally given to photographers, from Lei, Per Lui in Italy, Vogue in the USA, The Face in Britain, and Le Monde and Le Figaro in France. This beautiful hardback book brings together an extensive collection of his work, featuring striking images of smouldering and smoky-eyed men and women who vibrate with New Wave energy. Viramontes worked with some of the most celebrated names in fashion including Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Chanel, Claude Montana and Christian Dior. His images, from the portraits of Paloma Picasso and Isabella Rossellini to the album covers he conceived for Arcadia and Janet Jackson, perfectly capture the mood of the 1980s club and fashion scene.

Dean Kamen Books, Dean Kamen poetry book Conservatives Without Conscience Authors: John W. Dean
Publisher: Penguin
Published Date: 2006-07-11
Categories: Political Science
On the heels of his national bestseller Worse Than Watergate, John Dean takes a critical look at the current conservative movement In Conservatives Without Conscience, John Dean places the conservative movement's inner circle of leaders in the Republican Party under scrutiny. Dean finds their policies and mind- set to be fundamentally authoritarian, and as such, a danger to democracy. By examining the legacies of such old-line conservatives as J. Edgar Hoover, Spiro Agnew, and Phyllis Schlafly and of such current figures as Dick Cheney, Newt Gingrich, and leaders of the Religious Right, Dean presents an alarming record of abuses of power. His trenchant analysis of how conservatism has lost its bearings serves as a chilling warning and a stirring inspiration to safeguard constitutional principles.

Ernest Dowson Poem
The Sea-Change
 by Ernest Dowson

Where river and ocean meet in a great tempestuous
frown,
Beyond the bar, where on the dunes the white-
capped rollers break;
Above, one windmill stands forlorn on the arid,
grassy down:
I will set my sail on a stormy day and cross the
bar and seek
...
