'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the houseA
Not a creature was stirring not even a mouseA
The stockings were hung by the chimney with careB
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be thereB
-
-
The children were nestled all snug in their bedsC
While visions of sugar plums danced in their headsC
And mamma in her kerchief and I in my capD
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's napD
-
-
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatterE
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matterE
Away to the window I flew like a flashF
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sashF
-
-
The moon on the breast of the new fallen snowG
Gave the lustre of mid day to objects belowG
When what to my wondering eyes should appearH
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeerH
-
-
With a little old driver so lively and quickI
I knew in a moment it must be St NickI
More rapid than eagles his coursers they cameJ
And he whistled and shouted and called them by nameJ
-
Now Dasher now Dancer now Prancer and VixenK
On Comet on Cupid on Donder and BlitzenL
To the top of the porch to the top of the wallM
Now dash away dash away dash away allM
-
-
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane flyN
When they meet with an obstacle mount to the skyN
So up to the house top the coursers they flewO
With the sleigh full of Toys and St Nicholas tooO
-
And then in a twinkling I heard on the roofP
The prancing and pawing of each little hoofP
As I drew in my head and was turning aroundQ
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a boundQ
-
He was dressed all in fur from his head to his footR
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and sootR
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his backS
And he looked like a peddler just opening his packS
-
-
His eyes how they twinkled his dimples how merryT
His cheeks were like roses his nose like a cherryT
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bowU
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snowG
-
-
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teethV
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreathV
He had a broad face and a little round bellyT
That shook when he laughed like a bowlful of jellyT
-
-
He was chubby and plump a right jolly old elfW
And I laughed when I saw him in spite of myselfW
A wink of his eye and a twist of his headX
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dreadX
-
-
He spoke not a word but went straight to his workY
And filled all the stockings then turned with a jerkY
And laying his finger aside of his noseZ
And giving a nod up the chimney he roseZ
-
-
He sprang to his sleigh to his team gave a whistleA2
And away they all flew like the down of a thistleA2
But I heard him exclaim ere he drove out of sightB2
Happy Christmas to all and to all a good nightB2
