My dear wifeA
I have tried to be enoughB
to fill the space between your sighsC
with something other than failureD
But each word I spokeE
fell short of the man you neededF
and your silenceG
became my mirrorD
-
You stopped reaching for meH
long before I let goI
I saw it in the way your eyes driftedF
past my faceJ
through my voiceK
as though searching for the manL
I once pretended to beH
-
Forgive me for mistaking your patienceG
for love enduringM
Forgive me for believingM
that trying was the same as being worthyH
The truth isN
you taught me what love costsO
and I could not afford its weightP
-
The boys will growI
and I pray they inherit your strengthQ
not my weaknessR
Tell them I was proud onceG
a father a husbandS
until I became the ghostT
haunting my own homeU
-
You will go onV
and the world will not slowI
for the sound of my leavingM
Do not grieve me longW
just remember meH
as the noise that fadedF
when the quiet became too much to bearX
-
I wish I could have been your peaceY
Instead I was your lessonZ
in how even loveA2
can break a manL
who wanted nothing moreB2
than to make you smileC2
