Bill Maher Books, Bill Maher poetry book Inside the Rise of HBO Authors: Bill Mesce, Jr.
Publisher: McFarland
Published Date: 2015-06-26
Categories: Performing Arts
There are two ages in the history of television: before HBO and after HBO. Before the launch of Home Box Office in 1972, the industry had changed little since the birth of broadcast network television in the late 1940s. The arrival of the premium cable channel began a revolution in the business and programming of TV. For the generation that has grown up with the vast array of viewing choices available today, it is almost inconceivable that our ever-expanding media universe began with a few hours of unimpressive programming on a single cable channel. Written by an insider, this is the story of HBO's reconfiguration of television and the company's continual reinvention of itself in a competitive and dynamic industry.

Bill Maher Books, Bill Maher poetry book Stand-Up Comedy in Chicago Authors: Vince Vieceli, Bill Brady
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
Published Date: 2014-04-14
Categories: Performing Arts
Ten years after Chicago saw its first full-time comedy club open, the landscape was decidedly different. Stand-up comedy has exploded in the last couple of years, a club owner told the Chicago Tribune in 1985, thats the only way to describe it: exploded. It was truly a comedy boom, with as many as 16 clubs operating at once, and it lasted nearly a decade before fading, taking with it some of Chicagos oldest comedy stages, including the Comedy Cottage, Comedy Womb, and Whos on First. Still, stalwarts like Barrel of Laughs (south) and Zanies (north) persevered. That part of the story is known; overlooked is the fact there was a comedy boom, period. To hear the story, it is as if stand-up comedy innately morphed from a dated nightclub scene to what one Chicago Sun-Times writer called Chicagos atomic comedy blast.

WITH BILL MAHER, ITS NEVER POLITICS AS USUAL! Conservatives know what they want and they never forget it. Except for the time Reagan went to the Vietnam Memorial and shouted, Gorbachev, tear down this wall! Heidi Fleiss and Dr. Kevorkian [are] two visionaries of American social life, the queen and king of coming and going. The Packwood diaries must be pretty racy, because most of the people who read them apparently cannot wait to get to the bottom of the next page. Which, of course, was Packwoods problem, too. "Politically Incorrect is almost single-handedly reviving political satire. . . . [It] has pulled off the rare trick of being irreverent without being irrelevant." The New York Times "A funny collection of jibes, jokes and tidbits from his hilarious late-night show." Playboy
