I met a soldier onceA
His eyes saw many stormsB
Wars beyond a battlefieldC
His body heavy hungD
-
He smiled he triedE
A little hasteF
His teeth were grittedF
Hands on his waistF
-
And all the whileG
He gently pacedF
I knew he hid the battle hazeH
-
He softly spoke in heavy tonesI
But he never once relayed the woesJ
Just fight the fight that he foundF
In himself not on the battlegroundF
-
He fought not just in the battlefieldsK
Not just with a gunL
A flag upon his shoulderM
And his jacket slightly slungD
-
He spoke of all the laughterM
Relayed all that he missedF
Said he I do it all againN
And do so without hasteF
-
And when he then became quite stillO
I heard his silent screamsP
And in that very momentF
I knew the battle ragedF
-
He bore no wounds to see at allQ
No scars or stitches did he ownR
But when he walked along the wayS
His heavy steps deafening soundsT
-
He turned and smiled and said to meU
Now I m homeward boundF
I hope we meet again somedayS
And maybe share some wordsV
-
Then he turned and walked awayS
His head was slightly hungD
And just for a minuteF
I saw the weight come onW
-
Now he s gone and no bugles playedF
No medals dangled r music playedF
Just echoes of his war withinX
Where too many soldiersY
Have found their endF
-
So when next you meet a soldierM
View them more than brave or strongZ
There's battles fought behind their eyesA2
That have raged a whole life longZ

Poet's note: My poem “I Met a Soldier Once” explores the lasting emotional impact of war on those who experience it. Rather than focusing on battles or heroism, I presents the soldier as a quiet, ordinary person whose pain is carried inside. The chance meeting shows how war does not end when the fighting stops; it continues in the memories and behavior of the soldier. The tone of my poem is reflective and somber, encouraging the reader to feel empathy as i did. Through this brief encounter, I suggest that soldiers often return changed, carrying invisible wounds that others may not notice. Overall, the poem highlights the human cost of war and reminds readers to look beyond stereotypes of strength to see the emotional reality of those who serve.
