The Temple Bell was out of tuneA
That once out melodied sun and moonA
-
Instead of calling folk to prayerB
It spread an evil in the airB
-
Instead of a song from north to southC
It put a lie in the wind's mouthC
-
The very palms beneath it diedD
So harsh it jarred so loud it liedD
-
Then the gods told the blue robed bonzeE
Your Bell is only wrought of bronzeE
-
Lower it down cast it againF
Or you shall shake the heavens in vainG
-
Then as the mighty cauldron hissedH
Men brought the wealth that no man missedH
-
Yea they brought silver they brought goldI
And melted them into the seething mouldI
-
The miser brought his greening hoardJ
And the king cast in his swordJ
-
Yet when the Bell in the Temple swungK
It jarred the stars with its harsh tongueK
-
Is this your best the oracle saidL
Then were you better drunk or deadL
-
Once again they melted it downM
And the king cast in his crownM
-
Then they poured wine and bullock's bloodN
Into the hot grey seething floodN
-
They gave it mellowing fruits to eatO
And honey combs to make it sweetO
-
Yet when they hauled it to the skyP
The Bell was one star shattering lieP
-
So for the third time and the lastQ
They lowered it down to be re castQ
-
The white hot metal seethed anewR
And the crowd shrank as the heat grewR
-
But a white robed woman queenly and tallS
Pressed to the brink before them allS
-
One breast like a golden fruit lay bareB
She held her small son feeding thereB
-
She plucked him off she lifted him highP
Like rose red fruit on the blue skyP
-
She pressed her lips to the budded feetO
And murmured softly Oh sweet my sweetO
-
She whispered Gods that my land may liveT
I give the best that I have to giveU
-
Then then before the throng awokeV
Before one cry from their white lips brokeV
-
She tossed him into the fiery floodN
Her child her baby her flesh and bloodN
-
And the crisp hissing waves closed roundW
And melted him through without a soundW
-
Too quick for pain they heard her sayE
And she sobbed once and she turned awayE
-
-
-
The Temple Bell in peace and warX
Keeps the measure of sun and starY
-
But sometimes in the night it criesE
Faintly and a voice repliesE
-
Mother Oh mother the Bell rings trueR
You were all that I had Oh mother my motherZ
With the land and the Bell it is well Is it wellA2
Is it well with the heart that had you and none otherZ
