Give me the sunlight and the seaB
And who shall take my heaven from meB
-
Light of the Sun Life of the SunC
O happy bold companionC
Whose golden laughters round me runC
Making wine of the blue airD
With wild rose kisses everywhereD
Browning the limb flushing the cheekE
Apple fragrant leopard sleekE
Dancing from thy red curtained EastF
Like a Nautch girl to my feastF
Proud because her lord the SpringG
Praised the way those anklets ringG
Or wandering like a white Greek maidH
Leaf dappled through the dancing shadeH
Where many a green veined leaf imprintsI
Breast and limb with emerald tintsI
That softly net her silken shapeJ
But let the splendour still escapeJ
While rosy ghosts of roses flowK
Over the supple rose and snowK
-
But sweetest fairest is thy faceL
When we meet when we embraceL
Where the white sand sleeps at noonM
Round that lonely blue lagoonM
Fringed with one white reef of coralN
Where the sea birds faintly quarrelN
And the breakers on the reefO
Fade into a dream of griefO
And the palm trees overheadP
Whisper that all grief is deadP
-
Sister Sunlight lead me thenQ
Into thy healing seas againQ
For when we swim out side by sideR
Like a lover with his brideR
When thy lips are salt with brineS
And thy wild eyes flash in mineS
The music of a mightier seaB
Beats with my blood in harmonyB
I breast the primal flood of beingG
Too clear for speech too near for seeingG
And to his heart new reconciledT
The Eternal takes his earth bound childT
-
Who the essential secret spellsU
In those gigantic syllablesV
Flowing ebbing ebbing flowingG
Gathers wisdom past all knowingG
Song of the Sea I hear I hearW
That deeper music of the sphereX
Catch the rhythm of sun and starY
And know what light and darkness areY
Ay faint beginnings of a rhymeZ
That swells beyond the tides of timeZ
Beat with thy rhythm in blood and breathA2
And make one song of life and deathA2
I hear I hear and rest contentB2
Merged in the primal elementC2
The old element whence life aroseD2
The fount of youth to which it goesD2
-
Give me the sunlight and the seaB
And who shall take my heaven from meB
