Compensations Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIK LMLM NONO

Not with a flash that rends the blueA
Shall fall the avenging swordB
Gently as the evening dewA
Descends the mighty LordB
-
His dreadful balances are madeC
To move with moon and tideD
Yet shall not mercy be afraidC
Nor justice be deniedD
-
The dreams that seemed to waste awayE
The kindliness forgotF
Were singing in your heart todayE
Although you knew them notF
-
The sun shall not forget his roadG
Nor the high stars their rhymeH
The traveller with the heavier loadG
Has one less hill to climbH
-
And though a darker shadow fallI
On every struggling ageJ
How shall it be if after allI
He share our pilgrimageK
-
The end we mourn is not the endL
The dust has nimble wingsM
But truth and beauty have a friendL
At the deep heart of thingsM
-
He will not speak What friend beliesN
His love with idle breathO
We read it in each others' eyesN
And ask no more in deathO
