When falls the soldier braveA
Dead at the feet of wrongB
The poet sings and guards his graveA
With sentinels of songB
-
Songs march he gives commandC
Keep faithful watch and trueD
The living and dead of the conquered landC
Have now no guards save youD
-
Gray ballads mark ye wellE
Thrice holy is your trustF
Go halt by the fields where warriors fellE
Rest arms and guard their dustF
-
List songs your watch is longB
The soldiers' guard was briefG
Whilst right is right and wrong is wrongB
Ye may not seek reliefG
-
Go wearing the gray of griefG
Go watch o'er the dead in grayH
Go guard the private and guard the chiefG
And sentinel their clayH
-
And the songs in stately rhymeI
And with softly sounding treadJ
Go forth to watch for a time a timeI
Where sleep the Deathless DeadJ
-
And the songs like funeral dirgeK
In music soft and lowL
Sing round the graves whilst hot tears surgeK
From hearts that are homes of woeL
-
What tho' no sculptured shaftM
Immortalize each braveA
What tho' no monument epitaphedM
Be built above each graveA
-
When marble wears awayH
And monuments are dustM
The songs that guard our soldiers' clayH
Will still fulfil their trustM
-
With lifted head and stately treadM
Like stars that guard the skiesN
Go watch each bed where rest the deadM
Brave songs with sleepless eyesN
-
-
-
When falls the cause of RightM
The poet grasps his penO
And in gleaming letters of living lightM
Transmits the truth to menO
-
Go songs he says who singsP
Go tell the world this taleQ
Bear it afar on your tireless wingsP
The Right will yet prevailQ
-
Songs sound like the thunder's breathR
Boom o'er the world and sayH
Brave men may die Right has no deathR
Truth never shall pass awayH
-
Go sing thro' a nation's sighsN
Go sob thro' a people's tearsS
Sweep the horizons of all the skiesN
And throb through a thousand yearsT
-
-
-
And the songs with brave sad faceU
Go proudly down their wayH
Wailing the loss of a conquered raceU
And waiting an Easter dayH
-
Away away like the birdsV
They soar in their flight sublimeI
And the waving wings of the poet's wordsV
Flash down to the end of timeI
-
When the flag of justice failsW
Ere its folds have yet been furledH
The poet waves its folds in wailsW
That flutter o'er the worldH
-
Songs march and in rank by rankX
The low wild verses goL
To watch the graves where the grass is dankX
And the martyrs sleep belowL
-
Songs halt where there is no nameY
Songs stay where there is no stoneZ
And wait till you hear the feet of FameY
Coming to where ye moanZ
-
And the songs with lips that mournA2
And with hearts that break in twainB2
At the beck of the bard a hope forlornA2
Watch the plain where sleep the slainB2
-
-
-
When the warrior's sword is loweredH
Ere its stainless sheen grows dimC2
The bard flings forth its dying gleamD2
On the wings of a deathless hymnC2
-
Songs fly far o'er the worldH
And adown to the end of timeI
Let the sword still flash tho' its flag be furledH
Thro' the sheen of the poet's rhymeI
-
Songs fly as the eagles flyE2
The bard unbars the cageF2
Go soar away and afar and highE2
Wave your wings o'er every ageF2
-
Shriek shrilly o'er each dayH
As futureward ye flyE2
That the men were right who wore the grayH
And Right can never dieE2
-
And the songs with waving wingG2
Fly far float far awayH
From the ages' crest o'er the world they flingG2
The shade of the stainless grayH
-
Might sing your triumph songsH2
Each song but sounds a shameY
Go down the world in loud voiced throngsH2
To win from the future fameY
-
Our ballads born of tearsS
Will track you on your wayH
And win the hearts of the future yearsT
For the men who wore the grayH
-
And so say what you willI2
In the heart of God's own lawsJ2
I have a faith and my heart believes stillI2
In the triumph of our causeK2
-
Such hope may all be vainB2
And futile be such trustH
But the weary eyes that weep the slainB2
And watch above such dustH
-
They cannot help but liftH
Their visions to the skiesN
They watch the clouds but wait the riftH
Through which their hope shall riseN
-
The victor wields the swordH
Its blade may broken beL2
By a thought that sleeps in a deathless wordH
To wake in the years to beL2
-
We wait a grand voiced bardH
Who when he sings will sendH
Immortal songs' Imperial GuardH
The Lost Cause to defendH
-
He has not come he willI2
But when he chants his songB
Will stir the world to its depths and thrillI2
The earth with its tale of wrongB
-
The fallen cause still waitsM2
Its bard has not come yetH
His sun through one of to morrow's gatesM2
Shall shine but never setH
-
But when he comes he'll sweepN2
A harp with tears all stringedH
And the very notes he strikes will weepN2
As they come from his hand woe wingedH
-
Ah grand shall be his strainB2
And his songs shall fill all climesO2
And the rebels shall rise and march againO
Down the lines of his glorious rhymesO2
-
And through his verse shall gleamD2
The swords that flashed in vainB2
And the men who wore the gray shall seemD2
To be marshaling againO
-
But hush between his wordsV
Peer faces sad and paleQ
And you hear the sound of broken chordsP2
Beat through the poet's wailQ
-
Through his verse the orphans cryE2
The terrible undertoneZ
And the father's curse and the mother's sighE2
And the desolate young wife's moanZ
-
-
-
But harps are in every landH
That await a voice that singsP
And a master hand but the humblest handH
May gently touch its stringsP
-
I sing with a voice too lowL
To be heard beyond to dayH
In minor keys of my people's woeL
But my songs pass awayH
-
To morrow hears them notH
To morrow belongs to FameY
My songs like the birds' will be forgotH
And forgotten shall be my nameY
-
And yet who knows BetimesP
The grandest songs departH
While the gentle humble and low toned rhymesP
Will echo from heart to heartH
-
But oh if in song or speechQ2
In major or minor keyL2
My voice could over the ages reachQ2
I would whisper the name of LeeL2
-
In the night of our defeatH
Star after star had goneR2
But the way was bright to our soldiers' feetH
Where the star of Lee led onS2
-
But sudden there came a cloudH
Out rung a nation's knellE
Our cause was wrapped in its winding shroudH
All fell when the great Lee fellE
-
From his men with scarce a wordH
Silence when great hearts partH
But we know he sheathed his stainless swordH
In the wound of a broken heartH
-
He fled from Fame but FameY
Sought him in his retreatH
Demanding for the world one nameY
Made deathless by defeatH
-
Nay Fame success is bestH
All lost and nothing wonT2
North keep the clouds that flush the WestH
We have the sinking sunT2
-
All lost but by the gravesP
Where martyred heroes restH
He wins the most who honor savesP
Success is not the testH
-
All lost a nation weepsP
By all the tears that fallU2
He loses naught who conscience keepsP
Lee's honor saves us allU2
-
All lost but e'en defeatH
Hath triumphs of her ownZ
Wrong's paean hath no note so sweetH
As trampled Right's proud moanZ
-
The world shall yet decideH
In truth's clear far off lightH
That the soldiers who wore the gray and diedH
With Lee were in the rightH
-
And men by time made wiseP
Shall in the future seeL2
No name hath risen or ever shall riseP
Like the name of Robert LeeL2
-
Ah me my words are weakV2
This task surpasses meL2
Dead soldiers rise from your graves and speakV2
And tell how you loved LeeL2
-
The banner you bore is furledH
And the gray is faded tooH
But in all the colors that deck the worldH
Your gray blends not with blueH
-
The colors are far apartH
Graves sever them in twainB2
The Northern heart and the Southern heartH
May beat in peace againO
-
But still till time's last dayH
Whatever lips may plightH
The blue is blue but the gray is grayH
Wrong never accords with RightH
-
Go Glory and forever guardH
Our chieftain's hallowed dustH
And Honor keep eternal wardH
And Fame be this thy trustH
-
Go with your bright emblazoned scrollW2
And tell the years to beL2
The first of names that flash your rollW2
Is ours great Robert LeeL2
-
Lee wore the gray since thenO
'Tis Right's and Honor's hueH
He honored it that man of menO
And wrapped it round the trueH
-
Dead but his spirit breathesP
Dead but his heart is oursP
Dead but his sunny and sad land wreathesP
His crown with tears for flowersP
-
A statue for his tombX2
Mould it of marble whiteH
For Wrong a spectre of death and doomX2
An angel of hope for RightH
-
But Lee has a thousand gravesP
In a thousand hearts I weenO
And teardrops fall from our eyes in wavesP
That will keep his memory greenO
-
Ah Muse you dare not claimY
A nobler man than heL2
Nor nobler man hath less of blameY
Nor blameless man hath purer nameY
Nor purer name hath grander fameY
Nor fame another LeeL2
