Each year cometh with all his daysA
Some are shadowed and some are brightB
He beckons us on until he staysA
Kneeling with us 'neath Christmas nightB
-
Kneeling under the stars that gemC
The holy sky o'er the humble placeD
When the world's sweet Child of BethlehemC
Rested on Mary full of graceD
-
Not only the Bethlehem in the EastE
But altar Bethlehem everywhereF
When the Gloria of the first great feastE
Rings forth its gladness on the airF
-
Each year seemeth loath to goG
And leave the joys of Christmas dayH
In lands of sun and in lands of snowG
The year still longs awhile to stayH
-
A little while 'tis hard to partI
From this Christ blessed here belowG
Old year and in thy aged heartI
I hear thee sing so sweet and lowG
-
A song like this but sweeter farJ
And yet as if with a human toneK
Under the blessed Christmas starJ
And thou descendest from thy throneK
-
A few more days and I am goneL
The hours move swift and sure alongM
Yet still I fain would linger onN
In hearing of the Christmas songM
-
I bow to Him who rules all yearsO
Thrice blessed is His high behestP
Nor will He blame me if with tearsQ
I pass to my eternal restP
-
Ah me to altars every dayH
I brought the sun and the holy MassR
The people came by my light to prayH
While countless priests did onward passR
-
The words of the Holy Thursday nightB
To one another from east to westP
And the holy Host on the altar whiteB
Would take its little half hour's restP
-
And every minute of every hourS
The Mass bell rang with its sound so sweetT
While from shrine to shrine with tireless powerS
And heaven's love walked the nailed feetT
-
I brought the hours for Angelus bellsU
And from a thousand temple towersV
They wound their sweet and blessed spellW
Around the hearts of all the hoursV
-
Every day has a day of graceD
For those who fain would make them soG
I saw o'er the world in every placeD
The wings of guardian angels glowG
-
Men could you hear the song I singX
But no alas it cannot be soG
My heir that comes would only bringX
Blessings to bless you here belowG
-
-
-
Seven days passed the gray old yearY
Calls to his throne the coming heirF
Falls from his eyes the last sad tearF
And lo there is gladness everywhereF
-
Singing I hear the whole world singX
Afar anear aloud alowG
What to us will the New Year bringX
Ah would that each of us might knowG
-
Is it not truth as old as trueZ
List ye singers the while ye singX
Each year bringeth to each of youZ
What each of you will have him bringX
-
The year that cometh is a kingX
With better gifts than the old year gaveA2
If you place on his fingers the holy ringX
Of prayer the king becomes your slaveA2
