When Their Need Was Mine

Vanessa Dizon Alvarez

I remember the time they called my name,
A simple text, a fleeting flame.
“How are you?” was all they’d say,
And I would rush without delay.

I gave my hand, I gave my all,
I stood to catch them when they’d fall.
Their voices rang when storms drew near,
And I was always standing here.

I reached for help, I begged, I cried,
But silence stood on the other side.
They turned away, they closed their eyes,
And left me lost beneath the skies.

But when the time came, I had no more,
My strength was gone, my heart was sore.
The “How are you?” that once was said,
Vanished like echoes, left for dead.

Now I have learned what truth can show,
That worth is fleeting, hearts can go.
I mattered most when they had need,
But never when it came to me.

But when the time came, I had no more,
My strength was gone, my heart was sore.
The “How are you?” that once was said,
Vanished like echoes, left for dead.
