A Tragic Dance

Our nation is dancing to the grave
A tragic dance I saw sorrowfully started
In the previous regime now intensified
With impunity; the dance we drummers
Struggled like fire extinguishers
On queue to quench during elections
Has now got escalated.
We jubilated like lunatics on a joyful journey
When our votes were cast and counted
We chanted political paean when APC won.

But our dance is now out of the flying pan-into the fire
Oh great people of my fathers' Land!
We labour for radical changes
But what kind of changes are we seeing?
Changing from worse to worst;
Our nation is dancing to the grave
A sweet sorrowful dance we drum and
Watch political dancers dance and twist their tongue
Leaving us drummers with painful tales
Deaths and hunger as pay for the price drummed.

The dancers happily dance across nations
Importing goods unbeneficial to our nation
Building beautiful bungalows abroad
Leaving our home as dirty as the market of leftovers
Saving trillions of thousands in foreign banks
We sadly drum, lament and die shamefully!
Oh patriotic drummers!
Let us come together and quell
This tragic dance as we are still
With our permanent voters card

But no more votes for old age
Since our elders are total failures
We are not too young to rule
Let us make a move
And change this tragic dance.

Poet's note: This poem was written in the year 2016, as a Lamentations to poor leadership and how we struggled to change the political party that has ruled our country for a long time without satisfying the masses. Just after a year of our struggle to change, we realized our national challenges deteriorated; as we recorded issues of killings, fulanis' attacks on other tribes, among others. Those issues stirred the idea of writing this poem. The poem present the experience of the nation where the dancers (leaders) are happily enjoying while the drummers (electorates) are suffering, dancers build beautiful hotels and house in foreign country while their country's building are dilapidated. The poem encouraged the youths to rise up and participate in the governance of their country since the elders has failed woefully.
