"in Time, I Will"

You were lying in bed on the ward
We spoke on the phone after visiting hours
And we texted each other in the night

I wanted you to brighten up my heart
And place a rainbow in my gray sky
You sincerely said, “In time, I will”

I honestly didn’t expect you to say this,
But your response comforted me
And I waited for you to keep your word

Even though you meant the things you said,
You were unable to fulfil your desires
Perhaps you weren’t thinking straight

You made a promise that you couldn’t keep,
But that didn’t stop me from loving you
I still think about the promise you made
