The Mad Man

The mad man's filled
With extra wisdom and power
And insight and knowledge
But the mad man himself says
The problem with him
Is when he wants to say one thing
Another enters his mouth
And he ends up contradicting his very self

When he wants to go somewhere
Another thought of another place
Registers in his mind and he heads
Backwards instead of forwards
And when he has a destination
And route in mind he chooses
The longest like the Israelites in the wilderness
Who spent forty years
To do a journey of forty days!

Poet's note: Sometimes, sane people exhibit behaviours that look abnormal and inconsistent with the behaviour of normal people. The Igbo have a saying that the mad man says when he wants to speak other things would enter his mouth. The poem continues the idea in "Season of Madness" and "Wisdom and Power." The poet looks at the behaviour of the decampee Governor and his utterances as being inconsistent with the behaviour of normal people.
