Heritage Day
How much significance could there be
In Heritage Day for you and me
What is the footprint of our race
What is the origin that we face
Was there a ruler, king or chief
Who had a reign, however brief
What was our historical background
Where exactly can it be found
Our ancestral lineage never provided
A people so diverse and divided
Traditions and customs adopted from others
Who are we my sisters and brothers
Hottentot, Bushmen or Koi-san
This is where it's said we come from
None of them were able to stand
For their acres or their land
A people always caught in between
A racial divide or so it may seem
So this year on Heritage Day
Let the past be what it may
It won't determine what we decide
We're moving forward with absolute pride
As a people let us chose
An uncertain pass is just no excuse
This is what we witness now
We will not answer to Amalawu
The genetic joining of black and white
Created a culture, that just might
Set the pace for all to see
Discarding the past, sets us free
In a Constitutional dispensation
Free from divide and demarcation
Building future success and prestige
Is how we honour our heritage.
