The Freedom Night

I remember that old and gloomy night
When expedient was it that we escape
At the expense of a dim crescent light.
Mother watched our captors in utter gape
Who fast asleep fell in our very sight.

She reached for my frail arm and held it tight.
Darkness was fast approaching towards dawn.
Suddenly she rose in great power and might.
In an instant her greatest fear was gone,
And within a moment the moon came bright.

Then out we crept from one of those dark caves.
The night was silent, the moon overhead.
No longer were we going to be slaves.
But then once outside a rear voice we heard,
We took to our heels and ran for dear lives.

Poet's note: 'The Freedom Night' paints a picture of God's deliverance of His people from a severe captivity which threatened to destroy them completely. Even though the word 'God' or 'Lord' does not appear in this poem, God is very much behind the scene, guiding their affairs in captivity and making everything work together for their good unto freedom. It also depicts freedom from darkness and sin into God's marvelous light.
