Without You

Vanessa Dizon Alvarez

Without you, I don’t know the road,
If I had shelter, a safe abode.
If roofs would shield me from the rain,
Or walls would guard me from the pain.

Without you, I don’t know the days,
If meals were served, or hunger stayed.
If every plate was bare or full,
If life was sharp, or merciful.

Without you, I don’t know the care,
If doctors came when I despaired.
If healing hands would reach my side,
Or illness left me there to hide.

Without you, I don’t know the years,
If laughter lived, or only tears.
If hope was gone, if dreams were lost,
If I had paid the final cost.

But you were there, a guiding light,
A steady flame through endless night.
You gave me shelter, gave me bread,
You healed my wounds, you raised my head.

Without you, I think I’d be gone,
A fading star, no longer dawn.
But here I stand, because you stayed,
Because your kindness never swayed.

So endless thanks, my soul will sing,
For all the grace your love did bring.
Without you, I’d have disappeared,
But with you, life is held, revered.
