Not By Choice

Vanessa Dizon Alvarez

They say I’m dramatic, too full of pain,
That sorrow’s a script I choose to sustain.
They claim I’ve built these walls so tight,
That I’ve locked myself away from light.

They think I asked for tears to fall,
That loneliness is my chosen call.
They say I wished for silence near,
To turn from crowds, to disappear.

But if it were mine to bend, to steer,
I’d cast away this heavy fear.
I’d trade the ache for gentle skies,
And let the sun in my weary eyes.

For none would choose a cage of stone,
Or seek to suffer all alone.
If only control were truly mine,
I’d paint my days with brighter lines.
