Now And Then. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBCC DEDECC FGHGCC IJIJCC KLKLCC

Did we but know what lurks beyond the NOWA
Could we but see what the dim future hidesB
Had we some power occult that would us showC
The joy and sorrow which in THEN abidesB
Would life be happier or less fraught with woeC
Did we but knowC
-
I long yet fear to pierce those clouds aheadD
To solve life's secrets learn what means this deathE
Are fresh joys waiting for the silent deadD
Or do we perish with am fleeting breathE
If not then whither will the spirit goC
Did we but knowC
-
'Tis all a mist Reason can naught explainF
We dream and scheme for what to morrow bringsG
We sleep perchance and never wake againH
Nor taste life's joys or suffer sorrow's stingsG
Will the soul soar or will it sink belowC
How can we knowC
-
You must have Faith How can a mortal weakI
Pin faith on what he cannot comprehendJ
We grope for light but all in vain we seekI
Oblivion seems poor mortal's truest friendJ
Like bats at noonday blindly on we goC
For naught we knowC
-
Yet why should we repine Could we but seeK
Our lifelong journey with its ups and downsL
Ambition hope and longings all would fleeK
Indifferent alike to smiles and frownsL
'Tis better as it is It must be soC
We ne'er can knowC
