The Unjust Knife

There season
A century old tradition
Has taken toll on them
Deprived them of their pride and privacy
Though conducted in secrecy
In the chilling wee hours of the day
The moment of pain and distress
Transforms them to fit
Into a society so unfair to them
Their cries are swallowed
By the inconsiderate wolves
Determined to support an archaic tradition
While they fight back
their efforts are thwarted
And legs held apart
By friendly old women
who clinically execute the act
Giving spirits a share of the girls' blood
To seal forbidden covenant.
