What It Is To Be A Hero

Take up the sword
And stab into the heart.
Trample the enemy,
Care not for their part.

Pick up the bow
And shoot at the head.
Down the horizon,
Leave them for dead.

Handle the spear
And pierce through their chest.
Throw them aside,
Move without rest.

For you are the hero
Of your story, bestowed.
With valor in mind,
Lift the load.

They are a failing knight,
Who might have a family,
But glory is upright;
Take from them, victory.

Poet's note: This piece was written on April 3, 2021. It is inspired by a story I read again after some time. A hero is only considered one to the people one protects. This is a weird and off-putting thought to me.
