Mouth Won't Be Shut

My mouth won’t be shut
Seriously, I can’t shut up my mouth
The more you force me to, is the more my actions will support it

My mouth won’t be shut
I can’t shut up my mouth on the matters that matter
Oppression can’t zip up my mouth
Tormenting and pinning of my rights have no power to silence me
I will always vomit nothing but the verity
I don’t care if that leads to death
But what’s the importance of living longer with no positive impression?
I would rather die earlier after impacting the globe than becoming useless granny

My mouth won’t be shut
I can’t shut up my mouth when girl child is raped in anterior of my eyes
I can’t keep quite watching her stagger
I can’t allow her bright future get roasted like maize
You may not criticize rape on reasons best known to yourself
But with all my voice, I say NO to it

My mouth won’t be shut
I can’t shut up my mouth when nepotism is deep rooted in this village
Did you know?
Nepotism is the enemy of peace
And where there’s no peace development can’t exist
How can we move forward if we denounce peace?
Where will nepotism take us to?
If you close your ears, I will send you a letter condemning nepotism
You must stop it!

My mouth won’t be shut
I always get out of my chipiloni blanket before dawn
Tilling the soil is what I do
This is because begging isn’t my priority
Cause and effect is what I value
For there’s no food for a lazy man
Instead of my kids benefiting from my sweat
Someone with a berry like calabash pockets my token
I can’t shut up my mouth
I am not against taxation for my name is “Responsible Citizen”
Anomalous taxation is killing us
This is why my mouth won’t be shut

My mouth won’t be shut
I can’t shut up my mouth when corruption has married our leaders
We are tired of feeding their baby named “poverty”
For how long should we tolerate these marriages that give birth to trouble?
It’s ungodly to seek divorce but just for these marriages
I don’t care to be called a sinner
As long as our leaders break up with corruption
And have the baby “poverty” dead
Then my mouth will be shut

My mouth won’t be shut
I can’t shut up my mouth when disarray has displaced unity
How can I keep quite when prejudice has swallowed justice?
It’s totally unfair, more than unfair to watch bad manners
Fighting against evil isn’t an option
Everyone with a reasoning brain must fight against the evil
Let everyone shout against immorality

My mouth won’t be shut
I will always speak out against any malpractice
I will always speak out applauding progress
When one wrongs, my mouth must criticize
When one does well, my mouth must say “well done”
I have no reason to shut up my mouth
My mouth won’t be shut

Poet's note: I wrote this poem in 2019 April for Africans who suffer oppression by their leaders. I stress that there's no need to remain quite if you feel that someone is oppressing you
