The Tree

Khayelihle Bongiswa Gamedze

In the field stood a tree,
An autumn's tree in summer's time.
Leaves were brown and some were down,
It wasn't hers to blame.

Then falls one in my gaze,
Waving wind all to the ground.
I stared at its trunk an empty maze...
Ants and insects sleep around.

The end of life is in the start,
Yet the start only seen in the end.
To dust returnest dust thou art...
Maggots must feast upon thine fall.
